About

Dustin Marzolf. Senior DBA, 13 years on SQL Server and Azure. Sole senior DBA operating an estate of 25,000+ databases across 300+ Azure VMs.

This blog documents what the job actually looks like at that scale while the standalone DBA role dwindles around it: the registry, the automation library, patch rings, monitoring economics, migration math, and the career case for reading “dwindling” as a rebrand with a raise attached.

Every post ships with runnable scripts and real fleet numbers, anonymized to ratios where employer details would leak.

Also modernizing SqlPowerDoc for SQL Server 2019, 2022, and 2025.
